Cybercrime Squad Charges Two in Crypto Child Abuse Case

Cybercrime Squad detectives have charged two men following two separate investigations into alleged offenders using cryptocurrency to buy child abuse material.

Strike Force Angle is an ongoing investigation by State Crime Command's Cybercrime Squad to investigate the scope and means by which offenders are using cryptocurrency to disseminate, purchase and produce Child Abuse Material online.

On Tuesday 13 May 2025, strike force detectives travelled to the state's northwest, where they executed a number of search warrants.

In Gunnedah, detectives allegedly seized 120 tabs of LSD, cannabis and cash.

At an unrelated address in Tamworth, police allegedly seized a mobile phone containing child abuse material.

Following further extensive inquiries into these seizures, yesterday (Wednesday 28 January 2026), detectives arrested a 38-year-old man in Gunnedah relating to the prohibited drugs.

He was taken to Gunnedah Police Station and charged with supply prohibited drug commercial quantity, supply prohibited drug small quantity and knowingly deal with proceeds of crime.

The man was refused bail to appear at Bail Division Local Court 5 today (Thursday 29 January 2026).

Separately, about 6.40am today (Thursday 29 January 2026) strike force detectives arrested a 38-year-old man in Kootingal.

He was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with two counts of use carriage to access child abuse material.

The Kootingal man was refused bail to appear at Bail Division Local Cout 5 today (Thursday 29 January 2026).
