Toowoomba police have charged a 24-year-old Glenvale man with a number of offences- including serious assault police, dangerous driving and arson following a number of incidents in the Toowoomba area yesterday, including one where an officer was injured at Kearneys Spring, Queensland Police say.
An officer pulled over an allegedly stolen vehicle on Anzac Avenue on Kearneys Spring around 4.15pm and as the officer was attempting to take a man into custody, he was struck by the vehicle, fell onto the road and sustained an injury to his shoulder before the vehicle fled the scene.
The stolen 4WD was located by police burnt out in Berghofer Street, Biddeston around 7.40pm. It had allegedly been stolen from a Kearneys Spring address on March 15.
Around 8.50pm Polair1 spotted a silver sedan being driven in a suspicious manner in Spring Street, near where the officer had been injured.
Police attempted to intercept the vehicle with the driver allegedly failing to stop and speeding off. The vehicle was pursued by police before the pursuit was abandoned due to the alleged dangerous driving of the vehicle. Polair1 continued to monitor the vehicle.
With the assistance of Polair1, a safe location for the use of a tyre deflation device was identified and ‘stingers’ were successfully deployed, which resulted in the driver abandoning the vehicle in Kuhn Street, Kearneys Spring a short time later.
The male driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, fled on foot but was taken into custody in nearby Whalan Court.
The injured officer, a male senior constable, sustained soft tissue injury to his shoulder and received treatment at a local hospital and has since been released.
The 24-year-old man has been charged with a total of 15 charges including 1 count of serious assault police, 2 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, 1 count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, arson, two counts of failure to stop, driving without a licence and other traffic related offences.
He was denied police bail and remanded in custody to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court today.
