Dangerous operation, police car damaged - North Ward

A 36-year-old Palm Island man has been charged with multiple offences after allegedly crashing into a police vehicle before attempting to run from the scene.

Around 4.20pm yesterday police attended a residence on Eyre Street after a reported stolen vehicle was located in a carpark of a residential complex.

As police arrived the car allegedly attempted to exit the complex, colliding multiple times with a police vehicle and a fence surrounding the complex.

The driver of the vehicle, a 36-year-old Palm Island man, then allegedly jumped a fence into a neighbouring property and attempted to run from the scene. A member of the public restrained the man before police arrived a short time later.

He was charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, serious assault of a police officer, serious assault person over 60, obstructing police, driving without a licence and trespass. He was denied police bail and is due to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court today (March 19).

The female passenger was released without charge.

The car, a black Honda sedan, was allegedly stolen from an address on Benson Street, Rosslea, between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
