Darwin PCSG Leader Leads by Example in September

Darwin Prostate Cancer Support Group leader Monica Berryman still remembers the relief on her dad's face as they left St John of God Murdoch after his robotic surgery, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2020.

In the weeks that followed, the family gathered around him, snapping imperfect photos of togetherness that said more than words ever could.

This September for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Monica is taking part in The Long Run in support of her dad, and all the men in her family - including her nephews.

"The reason I'm a group leader and why I'm taking part in The Long Run is to ensure my nephews can spend more time with their granddad," Ms Berryman said.

Monica has been taking part in The Long Run for 5 years, and in 2024 alone, walked over 115 kilometres and raised over $40,000 for PCFA.

When she's not walking through the humidity-stricken streets of Darwin to raise funds, Monica is busy leading the Darwin PCSG.

"Being a leader of a group offers challenges and rewards that take a lot of personal drive and motivation," Monica added.

"To see the difference we can make to people coming to us for information or to talk is very rewarding.

"I became the leader of our group in 2024 when none of the current members were ready to step up and take up the role because I see immense value in a group like this for those impacted

Monica said a support groups offer a safe, non-judgmental place to talk and learn.

"As a peer-to-peer support group, most of our focus is on what each person is going through at that time in their life, and as a team, we discuss options for dealing with those issues or offer support," she added.

"If we are unable to assist with an issue, I will go back and research information or reach out to PCFA for advice. It's easier talking to people who know what you're going through."

Monica said her message to others was clear.

"Together we can make a difference. Start a conversation and ask people if they have heard of a PSA test or have had one. It's surprising how many men still don't know about PSA blood tests."
