Territorians are encouraged to rally behind their veterans tomorrow as the Veteran Games make their Top End debut at Robertson Barracks.
Backed by the Finocchiaro CLP Government's Operation Thrive program, the Games will bring together more than 200 veterans, current serving members and spectators in a high-energy competition celebrating teamwork, resilience and mateship.
Acting Minister for Veterans and Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the Northern Territory is home to one of Australia's strongest veteran communities, with more than 20,000 veterans.
"We are proud to back the Veteran Games here in the Top End. This event not only honours the service and sacrifice of our veterans but also strengthens the bonds between Defence and the wider community.
"By opening Robertson Barracks and hosting these Games, we are creating a space where veterans, serving personnel and their families can come together, compete, and celebrate the values of teamwork, resilience and mateship that define our Defence community."
Founded in 2022 by veteran and former Special Forces officer Heston Russell, the Veteran Games were created as a proactive health initiative in response to findings from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.
Veteran Support Force Managing Director and fifth-generation veteran, Heston Russell said bringing the Games to Darwin is a milestone for the veteran community.
"With the support of the NT Government and 1st Brigade, we're showing what's possible when Defence and community work together to back those who've served. This isn't just about sport - it's about restoring purpose, belonging and support for veterans at every stage of their journey."
Delivered in partnership with Veteran Support Force and 1st Brigade, the Darwin Regional Heat will feature Army, Navy, Air Force and US Marine Corps personnel competing in military-style problem-solving and physical challenges.
Commander of the 1st Brigade, Brigadier Doug Pashley said the Games were an important opportunity for both veterans and those still serving.
"It's a great opportunity for veterans to reconnect, enjoy some friendly competition, and for veterans and serving personnel to spend valuable time together. I look forward to engaging with participants, sharing perspectives, and helping grow the event even further in future years."
Teams will battle it out in obstacle courses, pool-based events and tug of war, with the winning side securing a $20,000 grant to compete at the national finals on the Gold Coast.
Robertson Barracks will open its gates for the free, full-day event, giving Territorians the chance to experience the action and connect with the veteran community.
