Death in police operations at Rockhampton

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the death of a 27-year-old man in Rockhampton overnight.

Officers were called to Allenstown in relation to an alleged stolen car around 11.30pm that had travelled from the Gladstone area (January 27).

Preliminary information indicates a tyre deflation device was successfully deployed on Gladstone Road, Allenstown.

The vehicle continued on for some time, before coming to a stop near the intersection of North Street and Victoria Parade.

The male driver and sole occupant of the vehicle then abandoned the car and fled on foot towards Col Brown Park shortly before midnight.

Police patrols throughout the night failed to locate the man and a search operation was commenced around first light today (January 28).

Shortly after 8am, a member of the public located the body of a man in the river at the bottom of a steep embankment in Col Brown Park.

The State Coroner has been advised and the Ethical Standards Command is investigating.

The investigation is subject to independent oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
