Death of an inmate from Cowansville Institution: Canada

On October 16, 2018, Mr. Jean-Pierre Lafontaine, an inmate from Cowansville Institution, died while in our custody of apparent natural causes.

At the time of his death, Mr. Lafontaine, 61 years old, had been serving an indeterminate sentence since June 11, 1991 for second degree murder, escape lawful custody, offence under highway safety code, possession of weapons, possession/use/traffic of stolen/falsified credit cards, possession of incendiary material.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
