A decade of Labor's crime failures

Jacinta Allan's weakness on crime has been exposed with data showing an additional 166,000 crimes committed a year since Labor was elected ten years ago.

Crime in Victoria is at its highest level on record under Jacinta Allan's Labor.

An analysis of 10-year's worth of Crime Statistics Agency data covering the period of the Dan Andrews-Jacinta Allan Labor Government has revealed the annual increase in serious crimes under Labor:

  • An additional 166,868 crimes (35 per cent increase) were committed a year since Labor was elected.
  • 7,185 additional youth crimes (40 per cent increase)
  • 218 per cent increase in aggravated burglaries (5,734 additional offences).
  • 96 per cent increase in motor vehicle theft (16,189 additional offences).

The worsening crime crisis in Victoria's retail sector under Labor can be highlighted by retail specific crimes:

  • 101 per cent increase in steal from a retail store (20,911 additional offences).
  • 140 per cent increase in retail assault and related offences (3,186 additional offences)
  • 152 per cent increase in Prohibited and controlled weapons offences (Retail locations) (713 offences)
  • 44 per cent increase in aggravated robbery (Retail locations): +44% (+255 offences)

Labor weakened bail laws, cut $50 million from the police budget, closed police stations and left more than 2000 police short.

Now Victorians are living with the consequence of Jacinta Allan's weakness on crime.

Two young boys, Dau kueng, 15, and 12-year-old Chol Achiek, brutally murdered while walking home from a basketball game in Cobblebank on September 6.

A father stabbed multiple times in his own home while defending his family.

A machete brawl between two groups of men in broad daylight at the Broadmeadows Central shopping centre.

A mother traumatised after her two young boys were driven away during a carjacking.

A woman filmed smashing through the glass doors of a high-end clothing boutique and making off with thousands of dollars' worth of luxury goods.

Victorian Opposition leader Brad Battin said: "A Liberals and Nationals Government will be tougher on crime and smarter on justice than Labor.

"We'll make bail laws stronger. If you break bail, you face jail-because accountability matters. We'll introduce Jack's Law, giving police and PSOs the tools and technology they need to get knives off the streets before tragedy strikes.

"And when crimes are committed, the sentences will be serious, and the consequences will be real. Justice will be clear and firm.

"We cannot arrest our way out of this problem. We need to give our young people pathways out of crime-and we will provide programs that steer them toward education, toward work, and toward hope.

"It's time for a fresh start. A safer, stronger Victoria-one where families can live free from fear, and where every young person has a fair shot at a better future."

Shadow Police Minister David Southwick said: "We cannot let crime become normal. Not here. Not now. Not Ever. Every Victorian has the right to feel secure at home. To walk the street without fear. To live in a community that is safe

"Crime falls when there are real consequences. When arrests come fast. When police are on the ground, day and night, stopping trouble before it starts.

"Victorians pay twenty million dollars a day in interest on Labor's debt. That is money lost. Money that could hire more police. Buy wands to take knives off thugs. Fund programs that keep kids from crime.
