Defence Brings Airpower To Skyfire

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) brought skills, precision and entertainment to the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in support of Skyfire 2026 in Canberra.

A crowd of more than 100,000 people attended the March 14 event. One of the highlights was a flying display by a RAAF F-35A Lightning II, based at RAAF Base Williamtown, NSW, demonstrating the aircraft's speed, agility and advanced capabilities.

The flying display included four passes along the contour of Lake Burley Griffin, with the last pass finishing with an unrestricted vertical climb.

Flight Lieutenant Zak Duggan piloted the F-35A Lightning II and said it was an incredible experience to fly over the national capital for the first time as an Air Force pilot.

"It's a real honour to be selected to fly this aircraft over Canberra in support of Skyfire 2026," Flight Lieutenant Duggan said.

"The F-35 is a highly advanced supersonic, fifth-generation stealth fighter with amazing acceleration, agility and 9G manoeuvrability."

Originally from Coolum in Queensland, Flight Lieutenant Duggan is currently based in Williamtown, NSW, as a member of 77 Squadron. He said becoming an Air Force pilot was his dream growing up.

"My journey started when I was about 15 when I started looking at becoming a pilot just out of interest," Flight Lieutenant Duggan said.

"I flew out of the local aero club in my hometown in Queensland, which spurred my passion to apply."

Flight Lieutenant Duggan's parents were also excited about their son's selection to support one of Canberra's most iconic events, and flew down to Canberra to see the flying display firsthand.

"I'm really excited that they'll be there in the crowd," Flight Lieutenant Duggan said.

"They're going out of their way to come down from Queensland to stay in Canberra and see me fly."

On the ground, Australia's Federation Guard delivered precision drill movements and ceremonial support, including a gun salute and intricate rifle handling routines.

The Royal Military College - Duntroon Band had the crowd on its feet with live performances of contemporary hits and classic favourites, showcasing their musical talent.
