Over the weekend, the Honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defence, met with Japan's Minister of Defense, Shinjiro Koizumi, during his visit to Tokyo, with Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The two Ministers discussed the regional and global security environment, and the importance of their countries' deepening defence partnership and interoperability between the Canadian Armed Forces and the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
During their meeting, the Ministers highlighted the recent signing of the Equipment and Technology Transfer Agreement, between Canada and Japan. This agreement will enable Canadian and Japanese companies to collaborate on joint projects involving the transfer of equipment, technology and Intellectual Property to Canada.
Minister McGuinty highlighted the recent release of Canada's Defence Industrial Strategy and how it aims to increase defence industrial collaboration with trusted partners like Japan. He underscored Canada's interest in strengthening supply chains and collaborating to co-develop and co-produce the next generation of defence equipment and technology.
