The Allan Labor Government is delivering hundreds of affordable new homes in the state's north-east as part of its plan for 800,000 new homes to be built over the next decade.
Minister for Precincts Colin Brooks today announced the redevelopment of the former school site at 64 Greta Road in Wangaratta, thanks to an innovative partnership with the Rural City of Wangaratta.
The redevelopment of the site will provide around 250 new homes on the vacant area of the site, including a mix of affordable private, social and disability housing.
The centrally located development will also include an early learning centre and a community centre, as well as sustainable design features.
The site is located within an established residential neighbourhood within walking distance to local services and easy access to healthcare providers and education centres.
The Labor Government will provide financial support and remove a land title restriction on the site to enable the redevelopment of the council-owned site to occur.
It's one of the ways the Government is creating the conditions needed to stimulate investment and build high-quality homes in the places where Victorians want to live, as part of Victoria's Housing Statement.
The Government has set a bold target for 800,000 new homes to be built in Victoria over the next 10 years, including 152,000 new homes in regional Victoria.
Other initiatives to increase housing and make it more affordable for regional Victorians include the Regional Housing Fund, Regional Worker Accommodation Fund and Big Housing Build.
