Delivery driver carjacked, assaulted, NSW

A man has been charged after he allegedly carjacked and assaulted a woman in the state’s Lake Macquarie region, NSW Police say.

About 7.30pm yesterday (Thursday 19 July 2018), the 21-year-old woman was working as a pizza delivery driver when she was stopped by a man standing in the middle of Tennent Road at Mount Hutton.

It’s alleged the man entered the car and demanded she drive him to Warners Bay.

When she tried to flee, the man allegedly grabbed her around the neck, stopping her from leaving the vehicle.

Members of the public came to her aid and contacted police.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District attended and arrested the man as he was attempting to break into another vehicle.

A police officer received minor injuries to his leg after the man allegedly resisted arrest.

The 27-year-old man was taken to the Mater Hospital for observation before being taken to Belmont Police Station where he was charged with:

- Detain for advantage;

- Choke person with intent to commit indictable offence; and

- Wound police officer in execution of duty.

The local man was bail refused to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Friday 20 July 2018).
