Dementia Australia community awareness event in Brisbane

Do you know someone living with dementia? Dementia Australia is holding a free community awareness event in Brisbane on Wednesday 27 June to provide the community with information about dementia.

There is estimated to be more than 425,000 Australians currently living with dementia and it is estimated that more than 80,000 of this population are living in Queensland.

With prevalence rates in Queensland expected to increase to more than 105,000 by 2025 and more than 233,000 by 2056, actions to increase awareness in the community are necessary.

Dementia Australia Educator and Group Worker Judy Bartholomew said the free information session will provide an overview of the impact of dementia on the individual and their families.

"We will also discuss what a dementia-friendly community looks like and how we can all take steps to become more dementia-friendly," Ms Bartholomew said.

"To show support for people living with dementia, their families and carers, Dementia Australia’s new Dementia Friends initiative is an important start for everyone in the community.

"A Dementia Friend is someone who wants to make a positive difference to the lives of people living with dementia through increased awareness and support. It means you have increased your understanding of dementia and how small things you can do can help support people with dementia to remain included, accepted and connected with their community."

Registrations are not required and all members of the community are encouraged to attend. ---
