Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister hosts virtual meeting with provincial and territorial counterparts

Today, the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, joined by the Minister of Middle Class Prosperity and Associate Minister of Finance, the Honourable Mona Fortier, met virtually with provincial and territorial Finance Ministers.

The Deputy Prime Minister opened the meeting by addressing the ongoing pandemic and reiterating the federal government's commitment to supporting Canadians and Canadian businesses.

The day's meeting began with a discussion including the Governor of the Bank of Canada, Tiff Macklem, who updated Ministers on the global and Canadian economic outlook, reflecting the Bank's recent Monetary Policy Report.

The meeting also focused on the federal government's growth plan to jumpstart Canada's economy once the virus is under control. The Deputy Prime Minister invited all Ministers to keep open lines of communication as the federal government plans for the upcoming federal budget and to share their perspectives on ways to fight COVID-19 and ensure a strong economic recovery.

Finance Ministers agreed to continue discussions on health care funding in Canada.

Finally, Finance Ministers discussed the ongoing action necessary to support Canadians through the COVID-19 pandemic. All agreed that continued coordination across all orders of government will be crucial for defeating the virus and for a strong, long-term economic recovery.
