Designing Slope Stability Criteria

Resources Victoria is contributing to the international conversation about mine rehabilitation.

Principal geotechnical engineer Karen Sonnekus presented on slope stability standards for closure of the coal mines in the Latrobe Valley at the Mine Closure 2025 conference in Sweden last month.

Her paper, co-authored with Caroline Ochocinski, proposed a set of design acceptance criteria for long term rehabilitation and closure that can be applied in complex geotechnical environments such as open pit coal mines.

More detail about the paper and its conclusions are available from Mine Closure 2025.
