Detectives confirm Taree child abduction and sexual touching as false report

Detectives investigating a report a girl was sexually touched by a man after being taken from the backyard of a home in Taree yesterday have confirmed the incident did not occur.

Police were told the 12-year-old girl was grabbed from behind while she was in the backyard of her home in Taree, taken to nearby bushland, and sexually touched by an unknown man, in the early hours of the morning (Wednesday 7 August 2019).

An investigation was launched by officers from Manning/Great Lakes Police District and detectives from the State Crime Command's Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad.

Following extensive investigations, including forensic examinations and speaking with a number of people, detectives have confirmed that the report was false.

The girl has been spoken to by police and offered support services.

Police would like to thank the community and the media for their assistance.
