Director-General condemns murder of journalist Andrés Felipe Guevara Henao in Colombia

Paris, 19 January-The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has called for an inquiry into the murder of journalist Andrés Felipe Guevara Henao in the city of Cali, Colombia, on 23 December 2020.

I condemn the murder of Andrés Felipe Guevara Henao. I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. The killers of journalists cannot be allowed to go unpunished.

Guevara Henao, a crime reporter for daily newspaper Q'hubo Cali, died in hospital from injuries sustained two days earlier, when he was shot by an unidentified assailant. He is said to have received threats in relation to his work as a journalist.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
