Director-General deplores death of journalist Lazzare Maxilien in Haiti

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has urged the authorities to investigate the circumstances of the tragic death of online journalist Lazzare Maxilien during a demonstration in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, on 23 February.
I deplore the death of Lazarre Maxilien. I call on the authorities to investigate the circumstances of his death and bring those responsible to trial, in line with their duty to protect journalists' safety in the exercise of their profession, notably when covering protests.

Maxilien, who worked for online media group Roi des Infos was shot while covering a workers' demonstration for higher pay and died in hospital hours later. Two other journalists were wounded.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
