Disruptions to busy Coburg North intersection

Vic Department of Transport

The intersection of Gaffney and Sussex Streets, Coburg North will be closed to traffic from 8am Thursday, 9 September for four weeks for major upgrade works.

The $11.9 million works will replace the existing roundabout with new traffic lights to make it safer and easier to travel through the intersection.

We are also installing pedestrian crossings at the traffic lights, improving safety for people crossing this busy intersection.

During this time, construction is scheduled between 8am and 6pm, seven days a week.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for the detours using Bell and Boundary Roads.

On public transport, temporary detours will be in place for bus services 534 and 561.

Footpaths will remain open and access will be maintained for people walking and cycling.

Following the closure, the intersection will reopen with a temporary roundabout and traffic management in place.

The next stage of construction will include installing the traffic signals, with all works expected to be completed by mid-2022.

These works are a critical state infrastructure project under current restrictions and work continues safely with strict COVIDSafe Plans in place.
