General, Vickie Chapman, has thanked Justice Trish Kelly for her outstanding service to the State and the legal profession, after Justice Kelly advised of her intention to bring forward her retirement by three months.
Justice Kelly will resign as both President of the Court of Appeal, and as a Justice of the Supreme Court, effective 1 September.
"Justice Kelly has had a distinguished career, working across state and federal jurisdictions," Attorney-General Chapman said.
"In December last year, Justice Kelly was appointed the inaugural President of the Court of Appeal, and the only woman President of a Court of Appeal in Australia.
"She took on this responsibility and challenge with gusto, overseeing a seamless transition to the new Court.
"Under Justice Kelly's leadership, the Court has been established and is now efficiently handling its appellate work, resulting in consistent, high-quality judgments," she said.
Prior to being appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2007, Justice Kelly was a District Court Judge, a Prosecutor with the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, and South Australia's Office of the DPP.
The Attorney-General has announced that she intends to nominate Justice Mark Livesey as the Court of Appeal's next President.
"Justice Livesey was the first Judge to be appointed to the Court of Appeal, bringing with him extensive appellate experience," she said.
"He is a highly respected litigator and has served in numerous professional appointments, including as President of both the South Australian and Australian Bar Associations.
"He will be an excellent leader of this Court," she said.
The Attorney-General will appoint a new Justice of the Supreme Court in August prior to Justice Kelly's retirement on 1 September.
