Donations and flood mitigation were the primary topics of discussion at Lake Macquarie City Council's first meeting of the year at the Hunter Sports Centre, kaiyu nungkiliko.
Councillors recommended approving three applications for funding under round three of the Donations Program 2025-2026, totalling more than $5000.
Mayor Adam Shultz said the grants were awarded to worthy not-for-profit groups with significant local membership or participation.
"Council is proud to support local grassroots organisations making a difference in our community," he said.
"This round of donations represents a great mix of causes, with environment, sport and youth programs all receiving funding for worthwhile projects."
The Scout Association of Australia NSW Branch, Cardiff Scout Group was recommended for $1089 to purchase and install six fire extinguishers and associated signage.
ReGen Alliance Environmental Partnerships Inc was earmarked for $2000 to assist with the costs of delivering the Youth in Landcare Environmental Connection Program.
Finally, the Shirley May Swan Mulla Memorial Women's Rugby League was recommended to receive $2000 to participate in the Abcare Greater Western Challenge Knockout Carnival.
Councillors also recommended adopting a new North Creek Flood Risk Management Study and Plan, which was publicly exhibited last year and provides up‑to‑date flood data to support decision‑making in the catchment.
The North Creek catchment includes the suburb of Lakelands, most of Warners Bay and a small portion of Speers Point.
The final study and plan considered advances in technology, newly available data and changes within the catchment since previous flood studies were undertaken.
The study investigates ways to manage existing, future and residual flood risk in the study area and assesses options to reduce flood risk, as well as economic, environmental and social impacts.
The flood risk management plan then identifies and prioritises options to guide the future management of flood risk.
