A new book by social service pioneer, Dr S Vasoo, brings together perspectives from practitioners and leaders from Singapore and Asia on delivering cost-efficient, accountable and impactful social services.
As editor for the book "Management Issues in Social Services", Dr Vasoo, Emeritus Professor from the NUS Department of Social Work, assembled contributions from experts in the sector to address key management challenges faced. The book explores topics such as organisational change, financial management, service evaluation and stewardship, offering practical guidance for strengthening social service delivery in Singapore and across the region.
The volume draws on discussion from the NUS Department of Social Work's Social Service Leaders Exchange Programme, as well as contributions by scholar-practitioners. Established by the Ee Peng Liang Memorial Fund and supported by local philanthropic groups, the exchange programme aims to promote philanthropy and social development.
Dr Vasoo said, "Social services can only be as effective as the systems that support them. This book draws closer attention to management practices that strengthen accountability, adaptability and leadership in the sector. As social needs evolve and resources become tighter, organisations must be more forward-looking in how they plan and deliver services. By sharing experiences and lessons from across Asia, we hope this book encourages social service leaders to build stronger institutions that remain relevant and responsive to the communities they serve."
Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Education and Minister-in-charge of Social Services Integration, was the Guest-of-Honour at the book launch. Guests included representatives from social service agencies, leaders from grassroots organisations, some of Singapore's first-generation and current political leaders, as well as academics and students from the University.
