Residents impacted by bushfire between Monday, January 4 and Sunday, March 17 are able to receive a free supply of emergency drinking water.

The program includes a free water tank clean and top-up of up to 5,000 litres of drinking water per property for residents whose drinking water supply was contaminated during the bushfires.

This assistance is being provided by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

To take up this offer, you need to register with East Gippsland Shire Council by 5pm on Wednesday, March 20.

Even if you are unable to access your property at the moment, you can still register for the program.

Council's Municipal Recovery Manager Shane Turner said the program is only available for properties that are not connected to a reticulated water supply.

"If your property is also able to access drinking water from the treated water network, you are not eligible for this offer. It is only available for people who have been affected by the fires and who rely on tank water for their drinking water," Mr Turner said.

Fire-affected residents who want to access this service need to fill in a 'request for water tank cleaning and water carting' form which is available on council's website or at its Customer Service Centres.
