Driver Charged for High-Range PCA After Hitting Police Car in Newcastle

A man has been charged over an alleged drink-driving offence near Newcastle last night.

Police were parked on Maitland Road, Mayfield, about 10.45pm (Tuesday 26 March 2024), when a vehicle drove past and allegedly sideswiped the unmarked police car.

The driver of the other vehicle allegedly failed to stop and continued driving along Maitland Road.

A short time later, police from Newcastle City Proactive Crime Team stopped the vehicle on Woodstock Street, Mayfield.

The 49-year-old driver underwent a roadside breath test which allegedly returned a positive reading.

He was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station where a breath analysis allegedly returned a positive reading of 0.167.

The Shortland man was issued a Court Attendance Notice for drive with high-range PCA, and not give particulars to other driver.

He will appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 9 May 2024.

Police have also suspended the man's driver licence.
