Driver Charged in Fatal Salamander Bay Crash

A driver has been charged following a fatal crash in the state's Hunter Region earlier this year.

About 7.25pm on Saturday 17 January 2026, emergency services were called to Nelson Bay Road, Salamander Bay, following reports of a two-vehicle crash.

The driver of a Toyota Rav4 – a 77-year-old woman – died at the scene.

The passengers – two men aged 78 and 79, and a 76-year-old woman – were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to John Hunter Hospital, all in stable condition.

The driver and passenger of a Subaru Forester – a 66-year-old man and 60-year-old woman – were also treated and taken to the same hospital in stable condition.

Officers attached to Port Hunter Stephens Police District established crime scene, and officers from the Crash Investigation Unit commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, the driver of the Subaru – a 66-year-old man – was arrested at Nelson Bay Police Station today (Thursday 2 April 2026).

He was charged with 13 offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasioning death), three counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm - drive manner dangerous, three counts of negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm), four counts of cause bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle and not keep left of dividing line-not class B/C vehicle.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 1 June 2026.

His licence was also suspended.
