Driver has lucky escape in Toorak

A driver has had a lucky escape after he lost control of his vehicle and landed wedged up against a tree on the edge of the Yarra River this morning.

It is believed the 21-year-old Balaclava man was travelling along Alexandra Avenue in Toorak about 1.45am when he lost control.

His vehicle, a black Volkswagen sedan, travelled through the guard railing along the side of the road and fell about four meters before coming to rest against a tree on the edge of the Yarra River.

The driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, managed to call Triple Zero with emergency services arriving a short time later and working to free the man.

He was later transported to hospital for observation.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
