Drivers test positive for meth and THC during school pick-up, South Australia

Multiple drivers have been found with drugs and alcohol in their system during Operation Stop Drink Drug Drive Schools, a state-wide road safety blitz targeting school zones.

A 39-year-old Mawson Lakes woman tested positive for meth during the operation while a 30-year-old man from Port Augusta returned a positive test for THC.

Both motorists were picking up children at the time of the drug tests.

Additionally, three separate men, aged 44, 65 and 58, all tested positive to methamphetamine while a 40-year-old man from Parafield Gardens returned a positive breath analysis. No children were involved.

A total of 911 alcotests and 93 drug tests were conducted during the one-day operation, which ran on Monday 28 October between 8am to 9am and again from 2:45pm to 3:45pm.

As a result of these tests, two vehicles were impounded and ten expiation notices were issued for various offences.

Superintendent Bob Gray, the officer in charge of the Traffic Services Branch, said the behaviour of motorists during the operation was deplorable.

"There's no excuse for such blatant disregard of the road rules," he said.

"It's one thing to put your own life in danger as a result of your poor choices, but to also put the lives of children at risk is incredibly dangerous and selfish.

"Taking drugs or drinking alcohol and driving presents a serious risk to not just the driver and their passengers, but to all road users."
