Easier travel on Midland Highway during Christmas break

Michael Ferguson, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The Rockliff Liberal Government is building safer and more efficient roads right around Tasmania.

A further 2 km of the Midland Highway upgrades has been completed and the speed limit returned to 110 km/h ahead of the Christmas holiday period.

In addition, speed limits will be raised to 80 km/h on other sections where there will be no work on the sites and it's safe to do so during the Christmas-New Year period.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Michael Ferguson said the progress in work on the Midland Highway provided an opportunity to minimise delays during the busy holiday season.

"The upgrades are located at three sites – near Ross, near Oatlands and north of Conara Junction," Mr Ferguson said.

"The latest completed 2 km section, south of Oatlands, means about 22 kilometres of the current works are completed and returned to 110 km/h as we progress through the final stages of the 10-year upgrade," he said.

"With work progressing well, we have also reached a stage in several areas where it is now safe to lift speed limits when no work is taking place."

The final 2.6 km under construction at Ross will have its speed limit lifted to 80 km/h over Christmas and will be completed in January with the installation of safety barriers.

Likewise, a 3.4 km section near the southern entrance to Oatlands will be lifted to 80 km/h during the break. This will leave a 3.3 km section north of Interlaken Road at 60 km/h, due to sharp drop-offs and bollards close to the traffic lanes.

The speed limit on nearly 6 km north of Conara Junction will be raised to 80 km/h during the break and outside of working hours when work restarts.

Mr Ferguson said the remaining 3.3 km of this upgrade site will need to remain at 60 km/h due to narrow lane widths and drop-offs close the road.

"We ask everyone to stay safe during the holiday period by keeping to posted speed limits and following the signs when you travel through roadworks," he said.
