Echuca War Memorial walls to be removed

Campaspe Shire Council will remove the three memorial walls surrounding the Echuca Cenotaph this Thursday (19 September) due to being unstable.

General Manager Infrastructure Services, Mr Richard Conway said temporary fencing was placed around the area in mid-August due to structural concerns. A structural engineer was then engaged to assess the walls and provide advice on options available to rectify the problem.

"The engineer's report confirms the brick walls are unstable, with poor foundations in place," Mr Conway said.

"In discussion with the Echuca RSL Sub-branch the walls will be removed, the area cleaned-up and made tidy ready for Remembrance Day activities on 11 November."

As the cenotaph and memorial walls are the property of the Victoria RSL, Council staff will await to be advised as to future plans for the site.

In the meantime, the brass plaques removed from the memorial walls will be securely stored.
