Redevelopment of the former Le Cornu site at Eighty Eight O'Connell Street has moved a step closer following a significant Council decision overnight.
Council has decided to invite a short list of proponents to submit their detailed proposals for developing the landmark location in North Adelaide.
These proponents were identified from respondents to a global Expressions of Interest (EOI) process that was conducted by Council in November last year, which attracted significant interest from local, interstate and international developers.
Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor said today selected proponents would be asked to submit detailed financial, commercial and development information as part of Stage 2 of the process.
"Council has been very pleased with the submissions we've received from developers in response to our guiding principles through the EOI process.
"We're excited to take this next step and we're confident that we can deliver a fantastic outcome for this landmark site."
The Lord Mayor said Council had listened to community feedback urging it to get on with redeveloping the site after it has laid vacant for 30 years.
"In the 12 months since Council took ownership, we've taken down the fences, landscaped and beautified the area, and repeatedly consulted local residents, traders and the wider community.
"We then developed guiding principles for the redevelopment based on community input and carried out a global EOI process, all in the space of a year."
The Lord Mayor said Council would continue to run community events on the site throughout 2019 to ensure Eighty Eight O'Connell was a place for the community to use and enjoy.
"There are several upcoming activations planned, including twilight markets this month, a 'Goblin Village' for the April school holiday period, and a history display in May," she said.
