The Elliminyt Wetlands project is taking shape with work continuing on the key development which will open up land for housing in Colac.

The Elliminyt Wetlands project aims to provide flood protection for approximately 70 hectares of downstream land enabling residential development in line with Council's Colac 2050 Growth Plan, as well as provide community open space.

Council Chief Executive Officer Andrew Tenni said the project is a significant step toward addressing the housing shortage in Colac Otway and it's exciting to see it coming to life.

"Council and contractor Bild Greenfields commenced work on the site in July 2025. Despite wet weather experienced in previous months, works have progressed well.

"Reconstruction of the basin, with a sediment pond, wetlands area, outlet pond and detention pond, are nearing completion. Drainage infrastructure is currently being installed to manage stormwater flows into and out of the basin," Mr Tenni said.

Significant environmental benefits of the project include prevention of sediment and nutrients flowing into Deans Creek and Lake Colac.

"The infrastructure includes a sediment pond, natural constructed wetland and vegetated swales, which are shallow, landscaped channels designed to improve stormwater quality runoff before it leaves the site.

"In coming months, the open space area will start to be developed, landscaping and open space planting will take place and we'll see the construction of pathways, carparking and playground equipment installed," Mr Tenni said.

The Elliminyt Wetlands project is anticipated to reach practical completion in May 2026.
