Emergency lane driver charged in Sunshine

Police arrested and charged an unlicensed driver in Sunshine yesterday after they were spotted speeding and dangerously overtaking cars in an emergency lane.

Police Airwing spotted a red hatchback travelling eastbound on the Western Freeway in Deanside about 1.45pm on Friday 10 March.

The hatchback was allegedly driving at speeds of up to 180km/h, dangerously overtaking vehicles in the emergency lane.

Numerous triple zero (000) calls were received from concerned members of the public as Air Wing continued to follow the vehicle to Ballarat Road at speeds of up to 130km/hr.

The vehicle, driven by a 41-year-old man from Melton South, was intercepted at the intersection of Duke St and Ballarat Road in Sunshine.

The man was arrested and has been charged with numerous speeding and traffic offences including reckless conduct endangering life.

He has been remanded to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court at a later date.
