Energy Ministers must reject Scott Morrison's CoalKeeper Tax

Smart Energy Council

The Smart Energy Council has urged State and Territory Energy Ministers meeting today to

reject the Morrison Government's latest attempt to subsidise fossil fuel power plants and

block investment in renewables.

"CoalKeeper is Scott Morrison's pro-carbon tax," said John Grimes, Chief Executive of the

Smart Energy Council.

"Families could be taxed up to $430 per year through their power bills to prop up ageing,

polluting coal and gas-fired power stations.

"Energy Ministers must also reject the so-called Congestion Management Model – the

Morrison Government's SolarStopper plan that will stifle investment in solar farms and

large-scale renewable energy projects.

"These are the worst possible policies at the worst possible time.

"The international community has been clear - we must stop funding coal projects and

instead dramatically increase support for solar but the Morrison Government is heading in

the exact opposite direction.

"The Morrison Government has no climate policy, no electric vehicle policy and the same

emissions reduction target that it had under the Abbott Government in 2015. This must

change."
