Enhancing our shopping precint's vibrancy with Bare to Beautiful

Bare to Beautiful was one of many initiatives we implemented in 2021 to support local businesses and shopping precincts in Boroondara. Between May 2021 and June 2022 the program delivered bright window installations and live musical performances to our shopping precincts. The aim of the program was to enhance the vibrancy and increase visitation to these areas during COVID-19 recovery.

Through Bare to Beautiful we activated vacant shopfronts across Boroondara's 53 shopping precincts and installed 18 temporary floral decals on windows. The decals were created by local artist Yan Yan Candy Ng, depicting botanical illustrations of flora from the shopfront's suburb.

The funding that supported the delivery of the Bare to Beautiful program came from the

Victorian Government Metropolitan Partnerships Development Funding (MPDF). We were one of 4 Victorian councils that received this funding under the Inner South-east Metropolitan Partnership.

The initiative also aimed to retain and attract new tenants to our shopping precincts and increased visitation, ambience and linger time at shopping villages. There was no recorded vandalism or graffiti to any of the participating shopfronts during the program.

The outcomes of the Bare to Beautiful initiative were:

  • 18 vacant shopfront windows were decorated
  • 22 Street Sounds musical performances were delivered at shopping precincts participating in the Bare to Beautiful program.
