The Territory Labor government is ensuring there is confidence in public administration and institutions.
Today the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption Amendment Bill 2023 has been introduced to parliament.
The newly introduced Bill ensures the ICAC has sufficient powers in line with modern practice to meet public expectations and maintain confidence in government accountability.
The Bill is a result of extensive consultation including a discussion paper, community consultation meetings and an exposure draft bill.
Among other things, the Bill strengthens Journalist Shield laws when it comes to the ICAC, increases reporting and protects whistle blowers and witnesses.
Importantly, the Bill also clarifies the intention for the ICAC to investigates matters of the most serious, systemic and sensitive improper conduct, and refer matters that don't reach this threshold to a referral entity that is more suited to investigate these types of matters.
