Escapee Charged After Manhunt At Bathurst

Police have charged an escapee following a manhunt in the state's central west today.

About 11am (Friday 29 May 2026), officers from Chifley Police District were advised that a 33-year-old male inmate had escaped from a correctional facility on Browning Street, Bathurst, while on a work detail outside of the prison.

Officers attached to Chifley Police District – with the assistance of Traffic & Highway Patrol, Dog Unit, PolAir and the Rescue & Bomb Disposal unit utilizing a drone – located the man in the backyard of a home on Stewart Street, Bathurst, about 2.20pm.

Following a brief struggle, he was arrested and taken to Bathurst Police Station where he was charged with inmate escape/attempt to escape from lawful custody and refused bail to appear at Bail Division – Court 5 tomorrow (Saturday 30 May 2026).
