Esplanade Dining Precinct road opening

The Esplanade Dining Precinct road and the Esplanade and Shields Street intersection will re-open to traffic from Monday 12 July.

Future management options in relation to pedestrian and motor vehicle use for the Esplanade Dining Precinct are currently being considered by Council.

Council advises that from Monday 12 July, the speed limit along the Esplanade from Shields Street to Aplin Street has been reduced to 20km/h. Signage reflecting the change to the speed limit are in place.

Pedestrians are reminded to give way to traffic and to observe and obey traffic controllers and signs advising changes to pedestrian and traffic conditions. Police and traffic controllers will be on site to monitor traffic and pedestrian movements.

The new speed limit offers greater safety, particularly for pedestrian movements along the Esplanade Dining Precinct.

The reduction of the speed limit by 10km/h will have minimal impact on traffic flow and will significantly improve the safety of our road users and pedestrians, which is a priority for Council.

Council has introduced the new speed limit following a review by the Cairns Traffic Advisory Committee, which includes Cairns Regional Council, Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Police Service.

Please note the roadway may be closed intermittently over the coming weeks to complete minor works.
