Ex-SSO Inquests Supervisor Named Coroner

  • Robyn Hartley reappointed as a Coroner of the Coroner's Court of Western Australia
  • She previously served as coronial inquests supervisor at the State Solicitor's Office

Robyn Hartley has been reappointed as a Coroner of the Coroner's Court of Western Australia.

Ms Hartley recently completed a six-month term as a Coroner that ended in April this year.

Admitted to practice in 2002, the experienced legal practitioner worked for 18 years across two periods at the State Solicitor's Office (SSO), where she became a Senior Assistant State Solicitor.

In 2013, Ms Hartley was appointed the SSO's supervisor of coronial inquests.

As supervisor, she managed and supervised all requests for representation from Government agencies involved in coronial investigations and inquests.

She represented agencies at 75 inquests and provided wide-ranging advice on matters relating to the coronial jurisdiction.

Ms Hartley also appeared as counsel on dispute applications and appeals against Coroners' decisions and findings as well as on behalf of the State Coroner in the Supreme Court.

Since May 2024, she was a member of the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT), presiding over guardianship and administration hearings and conducting mediations and hearings.

Under secondment, she served as general counsel with the South Metropolitan Health Service advising for the Fiona Stanley, Fremantle and Rockingham hospitals from 2020 to 2022.

Ms Hartley will commence her five-year term as a Coroner on 30 June 2025.

As stated by Attorney General Dr Tony Buti:

"I am delighted Robyn Hartley has decided to return to the position of Coroner after serving in the role for an initial posting of six months.

"While a SAT member, she managed a large caseload including conducting mediations and hearings to resolve or determine multiple strata title disputes, building complaints, tenancies, vocational regulation and other matters.

"During her distinguished career at the SSO, Ms Hartley was promoted to the role of coronial inquests supervisor. In that capacity, she oversaw matters involving government agencies and appeared as counsel at a number of complex and high-profile inquests.

"Ms Hartley brings a high level of expertise in the coronial jurisdiction gained over many years, which makes her well-qualified to effectively and efficiently discharge her duties as a Coroner."
