Execution of warrant results in seizure of 9 kittens

RSPCA Victoria’s Major Investigations Team today executed two warrants at a property in Ballarat as part of a major investigation into alleged illegal animal rearing and animal cruelty matters. Inspectors today seized nine kittens from the property after the RSPCA received several tip-offs from members of the public.

The individuals who were the subject of the warrants are previously convicted illegal kitten rearers who are allegedly continuing to operate an illegal kitten rearing business despite a previous court ordered ban.

RSPCA Victoria’s Major Investigations Team Leader Lisa Calleja said the members of the public provided crucial evidence that allowed RSPCA Victoria to investigate.

“We rely on members of the public to provide tip-offs and information, so we’re grateful to those who contacted RSPCA and provided information which proved crucial to investigating this case,” said Ms Calleja.

“We were able to act quickly and secure these warrants based on the information provided to us, and the execution of these warrants today has resulted in the seizure of nine kittens from the property.

“RSPCA Victoria has previously prosecuted the alleged offenders on several occasions and they are currently prohibited from operating a domestic animal business.”

The maximum penalty for operating an unregistered domestic animal business is up to $29,805 for individuals and $109,044 for body corporates.

Any other members of the public who may have information about any individuals who may be illegally selling or rearing animals, particularly in circumstances where those animals present as ill, are urged to contact RSPCA Victoria directly as soon as possible.

All reports made to RSPCA Victoria’s Inspectorate must be lodged via www.rspcavic.org/services/tip-off or by calling 9224 2222. Facebook messages and emails through unofficial channels do not constitute an official cruelty report.
