Cessnock City Library is inviting residents to step back in time with a new exhibition, Café Chronicles: Stories of our Tea Shops, Refreshment Rooms and Cafés.
The exhibition will be open in the Vincent Street library's foyer throughout September, encompassing History Week, and will delve into the rich and delicious history of Cessnock's beloved eateries.
A free morning tea and walkthrough with the curator will mark the launch of the exhibition at 10am on Wednesday 3 September.
For generations, a trip to town often meant a much-anticipated tea date or a leisurely luncheon. These local establishments weren't just places to eat – they were vibrant social hubs, with each boasting its own distinctive character and charm.
The exhibition shines a spotlight on these memorable spots, including the legendary Niagara Café, famously known as 'The House of Civility', reminding visitors of an era when manners were as important as the menu. It's a fascinating look at the social fabric these venues wove into the community.
Library Services Co-ordinator Rose-Marie Walters encouraged the community to visit the exhibition, rediscover charming stories, and share their own memories.
"This exhibition is a wonderful journey back in time, offering a nostalgic look at the cafes and tearooms that were once the heart of our community's social life," she said.
"It reminds us of the simple pleasures and unique personalities that shaped our local history."
Bookings are essential for the launch morning tea and walkthrough. Visit the What's On page of the Library website and click 'Adults' to reserve a spot for the launch.
