Expansion works for Carrum Life Saving Club given the green light
The Carrum Life Saving Club will undergo significant expansion works to help meet the needs of growing community demand.
Council has agreed to contribute $800,000, which combined with the $1.5 million grant from the State Government will mean the project can now progress.
Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said Council's investment will ensure the expansion works can go ahead enabling the Carrum Life Saving Club to accommodate both its growing membership and the increase in visitors to Carrum beach.
"We anticipate that in the future, visitor numbers will only increase further with the new Carrum foreshore park and the Changing Places facility likely to be a major drawcard to the area," said Cr Staikos.
Banksia Ward Councillor and lifesaver Cameron Howe said the expansion was crucial for the club and would help address the insufficient storage space for jet skis, trailers and other rescue equipment. "In the past five years, Carrum had the highest median number of rescues of all metropolitan clubs, and with the increasing popularity of Carrum beach, enhancing the storage and emergency response capacity is essential," said Cr Howe.
The expansion works will include:
- expanded ground floor storage capacity
- additional change facilities to allow for separation of junior/senior members
- a separate family change room
- provision of a first-floor deck to support observation/lifesaving activity
- creation of first floor lifesaver facilities to support training/observation activity
- extended first floor layout with additional office and dry storage space
- realignment of the foreshore ramp to support ease of vehicle movement
- minor refurbishments, including upgrading the existing cladding
Construction works are due to commence in March 2022, aiming for completion by the end of the year.
