The fragility of the Holocaust memory and dwindling numbers of survivors globally has prompted the development a two-week commemorative online event to address this critical juncture.
Monash University's Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation (ACJC) will host the Jan Randa Aftermath Series, starting this Sunday, August 8 over Zoom.
It will bring together researchers, writers, curators and a variety of experts committed to the preservation of the history of the Holocaust.
Sessions will examine the digital preservation of survivor stories, Holocaust photography, poetry, art, panel discussions, music and more.
"Soon Holocaust survivors will no longer be present to offer their personal recollections and help forge the memory of the Holocaust,"ACJC Director Professor Rivke Margolis said.
"Whilst this precarious moment has been anticipated for some time, it is important, now more than ever, that we examine concepts of 'postmemory' and ensure recollections of this trauma live on and can be acknowledged by those who weren't alive at the time."
Organisers said Holocaust museums and institutions across the world have traditionally relied upon firsthand survivor stories to guide patrons through their halls, to lead ceremonies and conduct student outreach.
"In the face of the looming aftermath of the aftermath, and the pandemic's impact on our world, we are now grappling with ways to preserve and present traces of Holocaust surivors and their stories," Dr Noah Shenker, ACJC Senior Lecturer and event convener said.
"The pandemic stripped survivors of their sense of identity and community. No longer could they attend forums, connect face-to-face with fellow survivors and have access to the outlets they need.
"Beyond this, their health and age overall means our opportunities to interact with survivors are dwindling."
Organisers said technology and new media might be key to capturing survivor stories and ensuring they live on, as well as the digitisation of Holocaust documents.
Dr Jan Randa was a Jewish scholar, Holocaust survivor and educator of generations of Australian students. The Jan Randa Aftermath Series: The Precariousness of Holocaust Memory will be held 8-22 August 2021 by Monash University's Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation in partnership with the Jewish Holocaust Centre.
