The Allan Labor Government is making travel easier for all passengers this festive season with two days of free travel across Victoria and more ways to travel to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for the Boxing Day Test.
Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams today announced there will be extra services over the weekend to get travelers to the Test and public transport will be free on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve across all metro and regional trains, trams and buses.
There will be 48 additional services operating each day, making it easier to get to and from the MCG and try out the Metro Tunnel as part of the Summer Start timetable.
Victorians are already benefiting from free public transport on weekends ahead of the Big Switch on 1 February which will fully integrate the Metro Tunnel into the network
All public transport is set to be free for everyone on 25 and 31 December to help farewell 2025.
On Christmas Day, public transport will be free from 3:00am Thursday, 25 December until 3:00am on Boxing Day and run to a regular Sunday timetable with some changes for V/Line coach services.
V/Line passengers on long-distance train and scheduled coach services still need to book their Christmas Day and New Year's Eve travel and will be issued a ticket free of charge. No ticket is required for regional town bus travel.
Hopping on a train, tram or bus is the easiest way to get around Victoria to bring in the New Year, with free travel available from 6:00pm on Wednesday, 31 December and V/Line long-distance passengers arriving in Melbourne after 6:00pm will also travel free.
Victorians can celebrate well into the night, with extra services to operate and free travel until 6:00am on New Year's Day. On New Year's Eve, all City Loop stations will operate until 3:00am to provide more options to get passengers where they need to go.
For V/Line passengers, the first service from Melbourne to all regional destinations on New Year's Day will also be free, regardless of whether it departs before or after 6:00am.
From Thursday, 1 January all passengers under 18 will be eligible for free travel with a youth myki anywhere and anytime, while Seniors, Carers and Disability Support Pensioners will be able to enjoy free travel on public transport on weekends anywhere in Victoria.
