Failing Jaensch needs to protect Tasmanian children

Tasmanian Labor

Human Services Minister Roger Jaensch needs to put the safety of Tasmanian children ahead of protecting his own job.

After sustained questioning in Parliament where Minister Jaensch refused to provide answers about serious incidents involving children because he either didn't know the details or was deliberately misleading the Parliament, Mr Jaensch finally revealed to the ABC late last night that four of six cases being investigated involved the deaths of young children*.

Shadow Minister for Child Safety Josh Willie said Mr Jaensch ended a disastrous session of Parliament still focused on spin over the safety of children.

"Children's lives are at stake yet Minister Jaensch is more focused on his media strategy," Mr Willie said.

"When asked simple questions about serious child safety cases Minister Jaensch could not provide answers or assurances that system failings were being addressed.

"Minister Jaensch is ultimately responsible and he needs to address the failings that are occurring in all of his portfolios."
