Family-friendly future for Market Square

St Arnaud's Market Square is set for a major upgrade under an exciting new master plan being developed by Northern Grampians Shire Council.

Earlier this year, residents were asked to 'think inside the square' and let council know how Market Square is currently used and how they would like to see the space used in the future. The information provided by the community fed into the draft master plan which is now open for feedback.

A highlight of the draft Market Square Master Plan is an updated play space that builds upon the existing equipment. Family-friendly additions include a new high climbing net, a sandpit, an in-ground trampoline and a basketball half-court. The skate park will also be upgraded to enable use by people of all ages with a range of experience and abilities.

The master plan also proposes the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing linking the Town Hall precinct to Market Square. The traffic slowing device would give pedestrians right of way and would complement other features such as additional parking and footpaths that would allow families to park and enter the centre safely. Wide, accessible paths will enhance safety for all users and will double as junior and toddler bike routes.

In addition, the draft master plan outlines plans for restrooms, BBQ facilities, shelters, drinking fountains, picnic tables and improved access for motorhomes.

Kara Kara Councillor Tony Driscoll commended the local community on their input into the revitalisation project.

"This has really been an ongoing process that the community has gotten behind," he said. "There's been quite a lot of consultation and the fantastic ideas suggested throughout that process have shaped the master plan."

"The draft master plan details some exciting developments for Market Square that will make the space an asset for the community and visitors. It will also help further beautify the streetscape."

"It's a pretty exciting addition to Market Square and will certainly meet the changing needs and wants of our community."

"I encourage all residents to provide feedback to ensure Market Square is enhanced for locals and visitors alike."
