Fans can follow in Borobi’s footsteps this Commonwealth Games
Borobi fans will have the opportunity to follow in the famous blue koala’s footsteps these Commonwealth Games with a dedicated ‘Borobi Fan Trail’ linking key GC2018 sites and offering epic views of the Gold Coast.
The GC2018 mascot, GOLDOC Chairman Peter Beattie AC, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey and City of Gold Coast Deputy Mayor Donna Gates launched the ‘Borobi Fan Trail’ today which stretches 8.5 kilometres from the Optus Aquatic Centre at Southport to Victoria Park at Broadbeach.
"The Borobi Fan Trail features ten colourful life-sized Borobi sculptures in different models as well as fun footprints and signage which fans can follow while walking or cycling along," Mr Beattie said.
"Since Borobi made the legendary leap from a helicopter at Burleigh Beach in 2016 he has embraced the Gold Coast lifestyle and has become one of the most recognisable locals. He knows the best way around the Gold Coast so follow his footsteps and have some fun along the way."
Mr Beattie revealed the Borobi Fan Trail sculptures would be some of the key locations for a new game on the GC2018 app.
"The TAFE Basketball Hunt game offers users the opportunity to win prizes by visiting key GC2018 sites and scanning QR codes including along the Borobi Fan Trail," he said.
"The more locations players visit, the more points they collect. A winner is drawn from the top 20 scorers each day with a daily prize from TAFE Queensland of four tickets to GC2018 sporting events awarded.
"The grand prize drawn on the 13 April includes two Closing Ceremony tickets, a singlet and basketball."
Mr Beattie said other new features of the GC2018 app include a Medal Tally, Sports Schedule for results and Watch it Live with a link to live streaming of the events.
"I encourage everyone to download the GC2018 app and turn on Bluetooth and notifications as this will be key to not only playing TAFE Basketball Hunt but also for getting vital information during the Games," Mr Beattie said.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey encouraged Gold Coasters and visitors to hit the Borobi trail, earn points and win prizes while getting active and healthy during the Commonwealth Games.
"Many of the GC2018 venues and Festival 2018 locations are within walking distance of Southport, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and other coastal accommodation hubs as well as surf clubs, cafés and restaurants," Mr Bailey said.
"The Borobi Fan Trail will be a fun route to get people to and from where they need to be.
"With heavy and light rail operating 24 hours a day with a high frequency timetable as well as extra buses, there are plenty of travel options available for Games visitors.
"We want people to embrace all forms of travel these Games and the Borobi Fan Trail is a great way to take in the Games atmosphere in and outside of venues."
City of Gold Coast Deputy Mayor Donna Gates said internationally acclaimed Gold Coast artist John Cox was commissioned to create the Borobi sculptures which are being erected across the City based on the lovable mascot and his passion for GC2018 sports and an active lifestyle.
"Mr Cox is an Academy Award winner, BAFTA Award nominee and his art regularly features in the Gold Coast’s famous Swell Festival," Cr Gates said.
"It’s been exciting to see the Borobi sculptures come to life right here on the Gold Coast at his Molendinar Creature Workshop."
Cr Gates said the Borobi statues would remain following the Games but may be moved to alternative ‘high profile’ locations to ensure the legacy of Borobi and the Commonwealth Games lives on for years to come.
TAFE Queensland Gold Coast General Manager, Karen Dickinson said TAFE Queensland was proud to be the presenting partner of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Basketball.
"As presenting partner, we are excited to be a part of the action and as a state-wide organisation, help spread the excitement into every corner of Queensland with the TAFE Basketball Hunt," Ms Dickinson said.
"The TAFE Basketball Hunt game offers all Queenslander’s the opportunity to get outdoors, challenge themselves and win some exciting prizes along the way.
"There are some exciting landmarks along the Basketball Hunt journey for people to visit and I am happy to provide a clue to one of those locations. It is a location where the Games 15,000 volunteers were trained by TAFE Queensland."
