Faster And Better Access To Justice In Melbourne's West

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government will open the largest court complex outside of the CBD next week - ensuring more cases can be heard and justice services can be easily accessed by Victorians in Melbourne's west.

Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny today officially opened the Wyndham Law Courts, a $270 million justice facility which will provide court services and support across multiple jurisdictions to the rapidly growing western suburbs.

The precinct will support almost 53,000 court hearings by 2036 and features 13 courtrooms, four hearing rooms and 26 holding cells.

More than 2,600 workers completed 880,000 hours of work to build the new court complex which features upgraded security, safe waiting areas and advanced CCTV systems to ensure every court user feels protected.

The courtrooms feature technology to allow remote hearings, display of digital evidence and video conferencing - allowing cases to be heard sooner and in more circumstances.

The Wyndham Law Courts will also house diversionary and First Peoples justice programs, as well as specialist Children's Court services to ensure all court users can get the help they need to reduce contact with the justice system.

Three functions of the court - the Magistrates' Court, Children's Court and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal - start operations this month.

A Koori Court and a Specialist Family Violence Court will also operate out of Wyndham from 2027, featuring safer facilities designed for victim-survivors of family violence as well as witnesses and protected parties.

The precinct is located next to the Werribee Police Station, allowing for quick and easy transport of those in custody. The Werribee Police Station was also upgraded by the Labor Government as part of the ongoing work towards community safety.

It will also be serviced by almost 400 extra weekly bus services on Route 15 - providing better bus services for more than 4,500 households.

As stated by Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny

"The Wyndham Law Courts are a massive investment in Melbourne's west. They will ensure more people get their day in court and get the help they need - all in one place."

"With this massive boost in court capacity, we're making sure every Victorian feels safe and has the support they need to get their lives back on track."

As stated by Member for Werribee John Lister

"This fantastic new complex means access to justice, services and jobs closer to home - it's all part of our work to keep communities safe in our growing western suburbs."
