Fatal - Alawa

A woman has died in a two vehicle collision in Alawa early this morning, following a short police pursuit.

It is alleged a small hatchback carrying four adult occupants ran a red light at the intersection of Trower Road and Rapid Creek Road, before colliding with a vehicle carrying only the driver at the intersection of Trower Road and Lakeside Drive at around 2:30am.

Police, Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene.

CPR was commenced on a female passenger of the hatchback, however, she succumbed to her injuries and died a short time later.

All of the occupants were conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital, with the alleged driver of the hatchback in police custody at the hospital.

Detective Superintendent Peter Kennon said "This is a tragic incident for all involved. Detectives from Crime Division are undertaking an independent investigation on behalf of the Coroner. This matter has been determined to be investigated as a death in custody with the investigation having oversight by the Professional Standards Command."
