Fatal crash near Walcha, NSW

A man has died following a head-on collision between two vehicles near Walcha in the state’s Central Tablelands last night, NSW Police say.

Emergency services were called to Thunderbolts Way, about 5km south of Walcha, about 10.45pm (Saturday 23 December 2017) after a BMW sedan and a taxi van collided.

The BMW’s front seat passenger, a 25-year-old man, died at the scene, while the driver, a 27-year-old man, suffered facial and suspected rib injuries. He was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests as well as medical assessment.

The driver of the taxi, a 58-year-old woman, and the passengers, five men aged between 19 and 25, were all trapped in the van before being released by emergency services.

The woman was flown to John Hunter Hospital where she is in a stable condition, while one man, aged 25, was taken to Tamworth Hospital with a suspected broken arm.

Crash investigators attended the scene last night to commence inquiries which are ongoing.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
