Fatal stabbing - Balmain

A man has died in hospital after being stabbed at Balmain today.

About 3.40pm (Saturday 29 July 2023), emergency services were called to Donnelly Street, following reports of an assault.

On arrival, officers attached to Leichhardt Police Area Command located a man - believed to be aged in his 30's - suffering facial injuries and stab wounds to his torso.

Police have been told the man was injured during an altercation with two men before the pair fled in a vehicle.

The injured man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

A short time later, police were notified of a vehicle fire on Preston Avenue, Five Dock. A firearm was recovered in the vehicle and seized for forensic examination.

Police have since been advised the man underwent surgery; however, has died in hospital. He is yet to be formally identified.

Crime scenes have been established at Balmain and Five Dock and will be forensically examined.

Local detectives, assisted by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, have established Strike Force Dears to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
